World War II
The main cause of the Vietnam war was the communist government spread. The United States came into the war because they were afraid communism would spread around the world. President Truman said that the U.S. would help and fight for and country that did not believe in communism. The French had ruled Vietnam for a short period of time and when they did it was very hard on the people of Vietnam. Vietnamese people did not have a sufficient amount of food, they would be put in jail if they tried to leave a job, and their taxes were very high. The war started on November 1 1955 where Saigon, Vietnam was destroyed. Northern Vietnam believed and communist and fought for communism but Southern Vietnam fought to stop communist rule. Many American soldiers were captured and killed and the U.S. did not accomplish their goal of stopping communism. As a consequence to the War, America had 350,000 casualties and Vietnam had one to two million deaths.
